Los Angeles Based Large Format Architectural and Interiors Photographer

Dave Adamson

What makes a great photograph?
A photographer with experience who shoots the old-fashioned way... real large format film.

David began his career in motion pictures where painting with light, hard light, is an art. Using hard light as opposed to strobe or in combination with natural light means you see exactly what the final result will be without the 'guesswork' of strobe.

Soon David transitioned to large format photography and began working with Harriet Robinson. As a team they provide incredible results no matter what they are involved in.

What's the difference between large format film and digital?
You can do everything you can with large format film as in digital HOWEVER the huge advantage is the ability to enlarge film to any size without loss of quality - can't do that with digital - the archival properties, and the quality. The greatest quality still comes from large format film. Of course you can scan it and manipulate it any way you wish digitally, but it's the original you're able to work with that counts.

What is 'hard light'?
Motion picture type lighting that's always on. While some photographers use strobe, the problem is there's no way to 'see the result' without Polaroids which are inaccurate. With hard light (constant light) both the photographer and client can see and adjust every photo to perfection. Does it take longer? Yes. David will spend hours lighting a scene often with up to 100 various lights to accent every detail... then he starts to shoot. With the immediacy of digital photography becoming the rage, few recall the days when photography was an art. And the cost of film and hard light is surprisingly competitive. There's no comparison.

In addition, Dave Adamson is also a musician. Listen to Dave's music.
